Svane’s Holistic methodology for packaging design - Each step of the packaging’s life must be assessed in regards of environmental impacts . However these steps are often interconnected, requiring a holistic point of view . No general rule can be made on which aspects should be focused on for the system . However the relative importance of packaging can be an important aspect .

Packed Product
Materials
Packaging’s protective funtion is strongly related to the product’s shelf-life (1). Shelf-life is a key-point of the waste generated from a product . (2) Packaging innovations such as - Active packaging are ways of extending shelf life . (3) Changes in primary packaging must be made in view of secondary and tertiary packaging, but also in view of consumer behavior . Optimization of packaging systems can diminish the ecological impact of a product .

Manufacture
Optimization of packaging systems can diminish the ecological impact of a product (filling level) Packaging influences shelf-life of a product and therefore the logistics of the distribution chain . Packaging-related initiatives are appearing that revolution the supply chain : short supply chanels .

Unappropriate p ackaging size can be an essential aspect (1) of consumer food-waste . Consumer’s behaviour and understanding of the proper treatment and disposal is essential in minimizing the impact of the packaging / product system . Food waste can be a key point often neglected in packaging design . Secondary shelf-life can help manage food waste .

### Eco-design of Packaging Manufacture Packed Product Distribution, Sales Use End of - Life Materials
End -of- life treatment is essential for the packaging to integrate a circular economy aspect . Mechanical recycling (1), landfilling and incineration are the main end -of- life treatments for most packaging materials . Biodegradation through home or industrial composting are the principal end -of- life treatments for bio -degradable plastics . They allow a biological revalorization of packaging and of the associated food-waste .
